Yangon’s ‘Contained’ Nightlife

The night market on Yangon’s Strand Road has always been very popular among locals. With a wide range of different snack stalls, no culinary cravings remain unfulfilled.

But a few months ago, a large part of the area was completely redesigned and revamped, taking Yangon’s nightlife to the next level.

Countless bars have been set up with a simple, yet trendy container design. Each bar is only as big as one or more shipping containers. Some are connected to its neighbouring container, while others have been stacked on top of each other, creating small terraces ideal for looking down onto the market and the hustle and bustle of Strand Road.

Hiso Heaven, Street Bar, The Box and many other venues have become great places for a post-work drink. Since its opening in June 2020, Jazz Café & Bar has been one of the busiest meeting places at the night bazaar. The bar is ideally located opposite Rosewood Hotel, a beautifully-restored colonial building, located near the junction of Strand Road and Sule Pagoda Road.

The fact that there are so many bars spread along the main road and that most bars are open-air-type, also helps to support the much needed social distancing!
