Lombok’s Sacred Volcano
Often looked at as “unspoiled Bali”, Lombok is home to the second highest volcano in Indonesia, Mount Rinjani (3726m), and is considered to be one of the best honeymoon destinations.
The mighty Rinjani mountain of Gunung Rinjani is a massive volcano which towers over the island of Lombok. A climb to the top is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have in Indonesia. Part of the famous ‘ring of fire’ this mountain also holds spiritual significance for the local people. It’s thought that the name Rinjani comes from an old Javanese term for ‘God’. Around the slopes of Rinjani there are lush forests sprinkled with waterfalls surrounded by stunning scenery.
Inside Gunung Rinjani’s immense caldera, sitting 600m below the rim, is the stunning, 6km-wide, turquoise crescent lake, Danau Segara Anak which means Child of the Sea. Hindus and Sasaks regularly make pilgrimages to the summit and lake to leave offerings for the gods and spirits.
