A New Wave of Island Beers
Although nothing beats having a classic ice cold Bintang on the beach during sunset, the monopoly for this Java-brewed Heineken-owned beer is slowly diminishing – and Bali now has a wide range of locally crafted beers. The fact that most craft beer in Bali is local is due to heavy regulations and high taxes on the import of any beers.
One of the first on the scene was the Canggu-based Black Sand Brewery, named after the colour of Canggu’s volcanic beach. Known for refreshing German-style Kölsch and tasty IPAs, this golden liquid is brewed at the Island Brewery in Kaba Kaba, where they also produce various beers under the Island Brewery label, including brews such as Small Hazy and Summer Pale Ale.
Another pioneer of Bali’s beer brewing is KuraKura, with its brewery high up in the cool and misty hills of Plaga. We recommend visiting this brewery and are happy to include it in your itinerary. The Island Ale is our favourite.
Last but not least, Island of Imagination (IOI) needs a mention. Headed by the very knowledgeable Pieter and Laura Prinslo, IOI has released over 10 different beers, many of which can be sampled at their very own South+East brewing cafe near Seminyak. Another stop we can add to your South Bali itinerary.
In Sanur, we highly recommend Lola’s beer bar with 29 different Bali beers on tap. This is the only outlet in Bali that sells so many beers supporting the local brewers.
Besides the above highlighted brews, Bali has a growing number of small independent brewers adding to the ever growing Bali Beer scene!
