Finding Ikigai
Looking back on the past decade, it’s amazing to see how life takes you far from home, introduces you to new places, people and experiences. My name is Toan, and I feel fortunate to have lived and worked in some incredible places. I spent four years in the charming city of Yangon, Myanmar, two years in the historic royal capital of Luang Prabang, Laos, and a year in Taiwan, immersing myself in Chinese studies. Now back in Saigon, Vietnam, I’ve embraced a new chapter – working remotely while staying “on the road.” It’s a chance to break away from the bustle of the big city and explore more of what the world has to offer. Life, after all, is full of opportunities to create meaningful connections and memories wherever we go.
Among places I have traveled to, Japan is one of my top favourites and I think this incredible country deserves a top spot on everyone’s bucket list. In an era of globalisation, where many places begin to feel alike, Japan stands apart with its unique culture, breathtaking scenery and unforgettable experiences.
From its timeless traditions to its modern innovations, Japan offers something truly special that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits. From snowshoeing through Hokkaido’s winter wonderland to marvelling at cherry blossoms in Tokyo during spring, Japan offers a captivating experience for every season. Take a boat ride amidst Kyoto’s stunning autumn foliage or bask in the sun and dive into crystal-clear waters on the idyllic islands of Okinawa. No matter your interests, there’s a piece of Japan waiting to enchant you.
While traveling, we’ll learn from Japanese culture and their people’s way of life influenced by concepts such as Ikigai – translated as “a reason for being”, Wabi-sabi – focuses on simplicity and rustic beauty which is applied in Japanese art, architecture and cultural ceremonies; or Omotenashi – the idea of providing the best service without expecting a reward.
The world is constantly evolving, with new ideas and innovations shaping our lives every day. While virtual travel can be convenient and enjoyable, the desire to explore, see and experience in person always fuels our longing for the next adventure. May 2025 bring you incredible journeys and unforgettable experiences!
