JORDAN

Sustainable Snorkelling Tour

Jordan’s Aqaba coastline is 27-kilometres long and is characterised by beautiful beaches that host many different activities.

Unfortunately, many of these activities expose the sea and marine life to the dangers of pollution. The Snorkeling for a Clean Sea Experience involves swimming with coloured fish and exploring the waters of the Red Sea, all while protecting the environment and its inhabitants by picking up waste that has accumulated among the coral reefs. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the colourful coral and sealife, while also helping to sustain and keep it clean. You will enjoy snorkelling in the fresh warm water and over spectacular vibrant red sea corals. Throughout the snorkelling activity, you will contribute to conserving this natural beauty by picking up any plastic or metal waste in the water. (Duration: 2 – 3 hours)

The tour is organised by Aqabawi, a community-based, youth-led enterprise that seeks to introduce visitors from throughout Jordan and the world to the unique culture and history of Aqaba, Jordan’s Jewel on the Red Sea. The company was founded in 2018 by Mustafa Al Ajlouni with the support of the USAID Sustainable Cultural Heritage through Engagement of Local Communities Project (SCHEP).

While much of Aqaba’s preexisting tourism industry focuses on luxury seaside hotels, Aqaba has much more to offer than just scenic beaches. Aqabawi’s experiences provide a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with local food, art, nature and history, while also employing local community members and serving as a source of income for those in need.
