Penang’s Hidden Gem
Peaceful and slow-paced, Balik Pulau on the south-west side of Penang Island, offers a laidback respite from the more developed and faster paced eastern side of the island.
Balik Pulau translates to “on the other side of the island”. Set in beautiful scenery of mangroves, waterfalls, vast stretches of paddy fields, fishing and agricultural villages, this area still has a kampong “village” lifestyle feel to it.
And let’s not forget Balik Pulau’s famous food – durian, the king of fruit. Many durian orchards can be found in this area and the fruit is said to be some of the highest quality in Malaysia. The exceptional taste comes from the soil, the weather, and the style and techniques the farmers use to take care of the trees and harvest the fruit. Nothing tastes better than delicious durians harvested straight from the owner’s backyard.
