Jordan: The Egeria Pilgrimage

Calm in the Storm

Up until the very last moment, everything in Nepal was running like clockwork… and then the monsoon decided to make a dramatic entrance.

The evening before our guests were due to head to Dhulikhel, we received an urgent call from their hill resort. Torrential rain had triggered landslides, knocked out power and internet and even damaged rooms. The hotel had no choice but to shut down immediately. To make things more exciting, nearly every other hill resort in the Kathmandu Valley was facing the same fate.

With departure scheduled for early the next morning, we went into full night-shift mode. Phone calls, messages, more phone calls. Eventually – victory! We secured rooms at Dwarika’s Hotel in Kathmandu, matching (and arguably upgrading) the original standard. The guests agreed to the change and, after check-in, were actually delighted. Safe, comfortable and still in style. Crisis number one: solved.

But wait… there was more.

Meditation was a key highlight of their trip. Unfortunately, most monasteries and retreat centers in the hills were unreachable due to landslides. Even Milarepa Meditation Village was officially closed while preparing for a large group. Not one to give up easily, we reached out personally, explained the situation with a bit of creative charm and – success – we managed to arrange a special visit.

The experience turned out beautifully and the guests loved every moment.

Throughout their stay, we remained closely involved: daily check-ins, on-the-spot support and even a personal airport send-off. Despite the stormy start, the guests left Nepal smiling, relaxed and genuinely happy with their journey.

Because, while we can’t control the weather… we can control how we respond – sometimes with quick thinking, flexible plans and a lot of late-night phone calls.
