The Return of Taroko National Park
It was recently announced by the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Li Meng-yen, that the government is scheduled to reopen parts of Taroko National Park to tourists by the end of the year, after an earthquake that measured 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Hualien on 3rd April 2024 and severely damaged some parts of the park. An exact date is yet to be confirmed. Currently, only the upper mountain region of the park including Hehuanshan Mountain is open, but this is not the “gorge” portion where all the primary attractions are.
Taroko National Park, located in eastern Taiwan, is a natural marvel known for its breathtaking marble gorges, towering cliffs and lush forests. According to the Hualien Tourism Department, Taroko National Park welcomed 3.45 million visitors in 2023.
The park’s centerpiece is the Taroko Gorge, a stunning 19-kilometer-long canyon carved by the Liwu River, featuring dramatic landscapes that captivate visitors. Rich in cultural history, the area is also home to indigenous tribes, adding a unique cultural dimension to its natural beauty. Visitors can explore hiking trails, visit the iconic Eternal Spring Shrine, or simply marvel at the spectacular views from various vantage points throughout the park. Taroko National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
