THAILAND
Alternative Uthai Thani
The classic Bangkok to Chiang Mai overland trip is a beloved itinerary in Thailand. However, stops in Ayutthaya and Sukhothai can sometimes feel repetitive, and the transfer between these sites can be lengthy, up to 6 hours.
At ICS Thailand, we propose an alternative: Uthai Thani province. At nearly equidistant from Bangkok and Sukhothai (3 hours and 3.5 hours respectively), it offers a refreshing change. Here’s what you can do:
One-Night Stay:
- Participate in an early morning alms-giving ceremony on a boat.
- Explore the morning market and enjoy a river cruise past villages along the Sakae Krang River.
- Take a bike tour on Thepho Island, visiting pomelo orchards, fish farms, and sugarcane fields.
- Visit Wat Chantaram with its stunning crystal hall and the “Golden Castle.”
Two-Night Stay (Highly recommended for nature lovers):
- Day 1: Enjoy the activities listed above.
- Day 2: Explore the surroundings, including: Hup Pa Tat Cave featuring a lush, primitive forest; and Ban Chai Khao known as ‘Thai-Switzerland’, surrounded by limestone mountains. We also suggest game drives and morning wildlife viewing by boat in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, a UNESCO site, home to tigers, elephants, leopards and over 120 bird species. For an adventurous twist, stay overnight in a watchtower hut for wildlife observation and stargazing.
Accommodation:
- First Night: Choose between a floating house on the Sakae Krang River or a former school turned elegant boutique hotel.
- Second Night: Opt for glamping or homestays near Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, or stay in a watchtower hut for the ultimate adventure.
