Timeless Wonders of Khiva
Step into a living museum in Khiva, one of Uzbekistan’s most breathtaking historical cities. Nestled in the heart of the Karakum Desert, Khiva was a key stop along the Silk Road, now famed for its well-preserved medieval architecture and UNESCO-listed Itchan Kala, the city’s stunning walled old town.
Wander through narrow alleys lined with intricate tilework, towering minarets and grand madrasahs. Visit the Kalta Minor Minaret, the Kunya-Ark Fortress and the Tash Hauli Palace, each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history. With its atmospheric charm and timeless beauty, Khiva is a must-visit for history lovers and culture seekers alike.
Khiva is located in western Uzbekistan, near the border with Turkmenistan. The nearest major city is Urgench, which serves as the main gateway to Khiva; Urgench International Airport (UGC) serves flights from Tashkent (about 1.5 hours). From Urgench, it’s a 35 km drive (40–50 minutes) to Khiva by taxi or private transfer.
Khiva is also one of the best places to cross into Turkmenistan, but visa rules are strict and most nationalities need a visa in advance for Turkmenistan (no visa on arrival). The nearest border crossing is at Shavat/Dashoguz, about 60 km (1 hour) from Khiva. After crossing, you’ll reach Dashoguz, Turkmenistan, a gateway to Konye-Urgench, an ancient Silk Road city.
