VIETNAM
The Art of Lotus Silk
Northern Vietnam is rich in traditional handicrafts, a cradle of age-old skills. Some crafts have flourished, while others are fading. Lotus silk is one of Vietnam’s rarest textiles, known for its lightness, softness and unique sheen. The process of making lotus silk is meticulous and labor-intensive: Each morning, artisans collect fresh lotus stems from ponds, carefully extracting the delicate fibers by hand. These fibers are spun into threads, requiring patience and skill. To produce just one meter of lotus silk, it takes thousands of stems and many days of work. The result is a fabric that is not only beautiful but also environmentally sustainable, using no chemicals or dyes.
During our tour you will meet an artisan and discuss how her family innovates and preserves this craft. A one-hour drive west of Hanoi takes you to a silk village, once the ‘mulberry capital of the north’. Despite economic challenges, one artisan has dedicated herself to keeping and evolving silk-making. Inspired by the national flower, she creates silk from its fibers. Watch her work magic with the stems, then enjoy tea as she shares her story and passion. This craft, while rare, is gaining attention for its beauty and sustainability. The artisan you meet on this trip is among the few in Vietnam who have mastered this ancient art, preserving and innovating the tradition. By creating lotus silk, they contribute to a growing appreciation of sustainable fashion. Each piece of lotus silk is a testament to the artisan’s dedication, making it a truly special souvenir.
