Festivals of Faith and Culture

The That Luang Festival, held each November, is Laos’ most important Buddhist celebration and draws devotees from across the country. Centered around the Pha That Luang stupa in Vientiane, the festival includes three days of vibrant activities: an elaborate candlelit procession, dawn alms-giving ceremonies for hundreds of monks and captivating cultural performances showcasing Lao music, dance and traditional costumes. Pilgrims come to pay respects and honor Buddhist teachings, making it a profound event for locals and visitors alike.

Another notable celebration is the Hmong New Year Festival, typically celebrated in early December. This festival brings together the Hmong community to celebrate their heritage with traditional songs, dance and games. Attendees dress in elaborate, colorful attire unique to Hmong culture, marking a joyful period of reunion, gratitude and cultural pride. Both festivals are unique experiences that offer insight into Laos’ rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
