Dinosaur Egg Salt
Bohol, a lush island province in the central Philippines, is known for its Chocolate Hills, rich coastal traditions and deeply rooted artisanal craftsmanship.
One of its rarest cultural treasures, Asin Tibuok – often called the ‘dinosaur egg’ salt – has been inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. This traditional sea salt is made using an intricate, hands-on process passed down through generations. Coconut husks are soaked in seawater for months, then burned, filtered, boiled and slowly evaporated until solidified into its distinctive form.
According to the UNESCO-Philippine National Commission, the designation is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve the practice, provide support for local artisans and raise awareness of Bohol’s unique cultural heritage.
