Japan

beyond the tokyo skyline

Just an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao offers the perfect escape from the city’s fast pace. Popular with both locals and international visitors, the 599-metre mountain combines scenic hiking trails, cultural heritage, delicious local cuisine and spectacular views, making it one of Tokyo’s most rewarding day trips.

Visitors can choose between several hiking trails, ranging from easy paved paths to steeper forest routes that wind alongside bubbling streams. While a cable car and chairlift are available for those seeking a more relaxed journey, hiking to the summit is a rewarding experience, especially for nature lovers who enjoy exploring at their own pace.

Along the main trail lies the historic Yakuoin Temple, a sacred Buddhist temple with a history spanning more than 1,200 years. Surrounded by towering cedar trees and colourful seasonal foliage, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere and a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s spiritual traditions before the final climb to the summit.

On clear days, hikers are rewarded with one of the region’s most famous panoramas, featuring the majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance. Even when the mountain is hidden by clouds, visitors are often treated to dramatic landscapes, rolling mist or a stunning sea of clouds stretching across the horizon.

No visit to Mount Takao is complete without sampling tororo soba, the mountain’s signature dish. This local speciality combines buckwheat noodles with grated Japanese mountain yam, creating a surprisingly refreshing meal after a morning on the trails. It may be unfamiliar to first-time visitors, but many quickly discover why it has become a regional favourite.

A visit to Mount Takao rewards travellers with breathtaking scenery, fascinating history and authentic local cuisine, proving that some of Japan’s most memorable experiences are found just beyond Tokyo.
