South Korea
hot august adventures
August in South Korea offers a spectacular blend of urban summer escapes, festivals, breathtaking nature and deep historical resonance.
To beat the mid-summer heat, locals and visitors dive into the city’s vibrant water scenes. The 2026 Seoul Summer Beach transforms the iconic Gwanghwamun Square into an urban oasis, while the sprawling Hangang Park swimming pools and waterside parks – especially around Yeouido, Seoul – provide a refreshing cool-down with stunning views of the city skyline, together with the night EDM jam. Along the west coast in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do, the world-famous Boryeong Mud Festival at Daecheon Beach offers an energetic mud-splattered celebration with concerts and slides.
Beyond the aquatic fun, August is a prime month for nature lovers. It is the peak season to witness sweeping fields of golden sunflowers turning toward the bright sky in places like Guwau Village in Taebaek, Gangwon-do. Meanwhile, water gardens like Semiwon in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do host the celebrated Semiwon Lotus Cultural Festival, where elegant blooming lotus flowers offer a serene contrast to bustling city life.
Most importantly, August holds a deeply special place in Korean history. On August 15th, the nation celebrates Gwangbokjeol (National Liberation Day), filling street corners across the country with fluttering Taegeukgi (Korean national flags). For a truly inspiring historical journey, a visit to Exhibition Hall 7 at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan is a must to understand the nation’s resilient path to freedom, as it reopens to the public.
Splash along the Han River in Seoul, get muddy at the Boryeong Mud Festival, stroll through colourful summer flower gardens or reflect on history in Cheonan – August is a vibrant time to experience Korea.
