Modernist UNESCO Treasures

We are delighted to share some breaking news from Uzbekistan: at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Tashkent Modernist Architecture: Modernity and Tradition in Central Asia was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the 8th property in Uzbekistan to be inscribed on the List. The serial property consists of 10 remarkable buildings and architectural complexes constructed between the 1960s and the early 1990s, a defining period in the transformation of Tashkent after the devastating earthquake of 1966.

The newly recognized landmarks include:

  • Zhemchug Residential Building
  • State Museum of History of Uzbekistan
  • Palace of Peoples’ Friendship
  • State Museum of Arts
  • Tashkent Circus
  • Central Exhibition Hall of the Academy of Arts
  • Alisher Navoi Cinema Palace
  • Chorsu Bazaar
  • Kosmonavtlar Metro Station
  • Sun Heliocomplex

Together, these landmarks showcase a unique mix of modernist architecture and traditional Central Asian elements. For travellers, this recognition offers another reason to spend more time in Uzbekistan’s capital. Alongside its lively bazaars, museums and vibrant dining culture, Tashkent now proudly stands among the world’s recognized destinations for outstanding modernist architecture.
