As the summer heat fades, South Korea’s cool autumn breeze ushers in a spectacular season of outdoor festivals and rich traditions.

This month features Chuseok, the Korean Thanksgiving. To celebrate, Seoul’s grand palaces – including Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung – will offer free admission, making it the perfect time to wander through history in a traditional Hanbok.

You can test your ultimate relaxation skills at the famous Space-out Competition in Gwangju at the Asia Culture Center – a fascinating contest to see who can do absolutely nothing for the longest time with the most stable heart rate. Later in the month, the spectacular Hanwha Seoul International Fireworks Festival will brilliantly illuminate the Yeoido night sky with world-class fireworks.

We also highly recommend venturing outside the capital for enchanting regional highlights. Head down to Jeollabuk-do for the magical Muju Firefly Festival. This eco-friendly celebration offers nighttime tours to witness nature’s glowing wonders in one of Korea’s most pristine environments. Meanwhile, history enthusiasts will be captivated by the Great Battle of Myeongnyang Festival in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do. This thrilling event recreates Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s legendary 16th-century naval victory with epic historical parades and stunning media facades over the dramatic Uldolmok Strait.
