HONG KONG
Instagram-worthy Housing Estates
Hong Kong is one of the most photographed cities in the world. Yet, the majority of photos usually feature the iconic skyline, the harbour and the glittering skyscrapers.
Yet, urbanscape photographers and internet influencers are now heading out into the public housing estates to catch their Instagram-worthy shots. These immense local communities offer a grittiness and vibrancy not often found among the glitz and glamour of the business districts.
Here are our picks for the most compelling Instagram snaps that capture the essence of these humble housing blocks:
Choi Hung Estate, Kowloon
Choi Hung Estate on Kowloon is one of the oldest public housing estates, dating back to 1964 when it was built to provide locals with affordable housing. It literally means “Rainbow Estate” due to the rainbow colours covering the exteriors. From the top of the parking garage, you can get great snaps with the basketball courts and the colourful buildings.
Lai Tak Tsuen, Hong Kong Island
Lai Tak Tsuen in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island is one of the most unique architectural structures in Tai Hang. Sitting on the slope of a hill with views over Victoria Harbour, it houses over 2,000 apartments. The two cylindrical towers offer opportunities for optical illusion-style photos.
Monster Building, Hong Kong Island
Yik Cheong Building, also known as the “Monster Building”, consists of five connecting buildings in Quarry Bay on Hong Kong Island. This cluster of colourful, grid-like residential blocks has become a popular Instagram-spot after appearing in the Transformers: Age of Extinction movie.
