Aqaba’s Environmental Excellence Shines: Second Place at ITB Berlin

Since 2014, the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards at ITB have showcased the most inspiring initiatives for sustainable tourism development in 6 categories based on the nominations for the GD Top 100 Stories. This 10th Edition took place at ITB Berlin 2024, on Wednesday 6th March, on the Blue Stage. 

At the event, the GD Story Awards revealed their winners, with Aqaba clinching second place in the Environment and Climate Category, notably for its Aqaba Bird Observatory.

In the captivating city of Aqaba, where the vibrant Red Sea meets the shore, lies the hidden ecological treasure of the Aqaba Bird Observatory (ABO). Situated in this coastal haven, renowned as a crucial connection between Asia and Africa, the observatory has been safeguarded and revered since 2004. Serving as a sanctuary for diverse bird species during their remarkable migration from Eurasia to Africa, the ABO boasts a unique water reuse system in this arid region. This innovative approach harnesses the ecological and geographical significance of Aqaba as a vital nexus between continents along the second most important migratory bird route globally, enhancing its invaluable role for migratory species and avid birdwatchers alike.

Enter the realm of ABO, where a rich tapestry of habitats awaits, meticulously crafted to entice migratory species. From tranquil waters to fragrant flora and rustling trees, these interconnected elements create a vibrant bird sanctuary. Despite its compact size, ABO boasts over 270 bird species, offering birdwatchers a golden opportunity to spot up to 80 species during day tours at peak migration times.
