Jordan: The Egeria Pilgrimage

Jordan

The Egeria Way

The Camino de Egeria is part of the John the Baptist Trail, tracing the journey of Egeria, a 4th century Spanish-Galician explorer and one of the first recorded female pilgrims. This sacred route, stretching from Mount Nebo to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, follows the footsteps of John the Baptist, linking Jordan’s Christian heritage with the origins of Christianity and deepening historical ties between Jordan and Spain.

Egeria’s writings provide a rare glimpse into early Christian devotion, documenting her pilgrimage from Mount Nebo to Jesus’ baptism site. Today, the Camino de Egeria revives this ancient path, allowing travelers to experience history, faith and culture firsthand. The trail covers the final two days of the John the Baptist Trail, starting at Mount Nebo, passing Mousa Springs and Rama and culminating at the Baptism Site.

In January 2025, the Camino de Egeria was officially twinned with Spain’s Camino de Santiago, strengthening cultural and spiritual connections. This collaboration includes:

  • Placing landmarks in Santiago de Compostela and along the Camino de Egeria.
  • Joint promotions to attract pilgrims and cultural travelers.
  • Infrastructure development to enhance the pilgrimage experience in Jordan.

The Camino de Egeria is more than a historic walk – it’s an opportunity to connect with local communities, experience Jordanian hospitality and explore the region’s deep-rooted Christian heritage.
