LAOS

Jungle Ecotourism

Looking for an unforgettable adventure in the wilds of Laos? Welcome to Nam Et–Phou Louey National Park (NEPL NP) – a remote and rugged paradise in northeastern Laos near Sam Neua. This massive park covers over 5,070 square kilometers and sprawls across ten districts in the provinces of Houaphan, Luang Prabang and Xieng Khouang. It’s not only one of the largest protected areas in the country, but also one of the most biodiverse.

Named after the Nam Et River (“Nam” meaning water) and Phou Louey, or “Forever Mountain,” this park is a haven for nature lovers, thrill-seekers and conservation enthusiasts. Established in 1993, it has become a shining example of community-based conservation in action. Here, thick jungles, misty mountains and vibrant traditional villages come together to offer a truly unique and immersive ecotourism experience.

Who lives here? The park is home to an incredible cast of wildlife: white-cheeked gibbons, civets, clouded leopards and dholes (those are wild dogs, in case you’re wondering). Thanks to hidden camera traps, even the presence of tigers and bears has been confirmed – this is one of the last places in Indochina where they can still roam free.

But Nam Et–Phou Louey isn’t just about spotting wildlife – it’s about protecting it. The park offers award-winning ecotours that directly benefit local communities and help preserve this precious ecosystem. A portion of your visit goes straight into conservation efforts and supports the people who call this region home.

Top experiences in the park include:

Nam Nern Night Safari – A thrilling nocturnal boat journey under the stars, perfect for spotting wildlife and learning about jungle lore and medicinal plants.

The Nests Trek – An overnight trek to sleep in comfy, treehouse-style “nests” near a wildlife salt lick. Jungle lullabies included!

Cloud Forest Climb – A multi-day adventure that takes you to the summit of Phou Louey through rare cloud forests and untouched wilderness.

Each tour is led by knowledgeable local guides and is designed to leave a light footprint while creating a deep impact. Nam Et–Phou Louey invites you to explore Laos like never before: wild, responsible and full of wonder.
