MALAYSIA

Independence Meets Inclusivity

Malaysia National Day, also known as “Hari Merdeka,” is held annually on August 31st. It celebrates the day in 1957 when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from British colonial rule.

Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country’s first Prime Minister, declared independence in front of thousands in Kuala Lumpur’s Stadium Merdeka, yelling “Merdeka!” seven times in a row. Another significant location is Independence Square, also known as “Dataran Merdeka”, where thousands of Malaysians, visitors and dignitaries congregated to celebrate.

Yearly, the event has different themes that symbolize national values like togetherness, diversity, resilience or progress. This year’s theme – “Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni” – invites both locals and visitors to experience a nation where hospitality, unity and cultural richness take centre stage.

“Rakyat Disantuni”, meaning “The People Are Prioritised”, reflects Malaysia’s deeply rooted values of warmth, inclusivity and community care – qualities that define the Malaysian tourism experience. Whether you’re wandering through vibrant cities or peaceful rural towns, you’ll encounter a way of life shaped by respect, compassion and genuine hospitality.

Putrajaya will host the stunning National Day parade, which will include colorful cultural performances, outstanding military displays and unity-inspired shows celebrating Malaysia’s diverse variety. Meanwhile, Penang will host Malaysia Day on September 16th, giving a colorful festival of tradition, cuisine and the arts – ideal for those seeking a genuine cultural experience.

Throughout August and September, cities and towns around the country will be decked with patriotic decorations and come alive with street parades, cultural displays and heritage-themed activities, making it a perfect opportunity to explore Malaysia’s genuine spirit.

As we honour Malaysia’s journey of independence and unity, we warmly welcome the world to join the celebration. Come explore a nation that offers not only natural beauty and cultural depth – but also a heartfelt commitment to making every guest feel right at home.
