Train travel in Myanmar is becoming more comfortable! From 1 July 2026, Myanma Railways is introducing air-conditioned DEMU Express services on the scenic Yangon-Mawlamyine route, making it easier than ever to explore one of the country’s most charming regions.

The new Train 83 departs Yangon at 5:00am and arrives in Mawlamyine at 11:00am, while Train 84 leaves Mawlamyine at 12:00noon and reaches Yangon at 6:00pm. The journey takes approximately six hours, offering a comfortable and relaxing alternative to travelling by road.

Each train features modern air-conditioned coaches, including Upper Class and First Class seating, with space for 312 passengers.

Mawlamyine Schedule:

Yangon to Mawlamyine (Approx: 6 hours & 8:20 hours)

• Depart Yangon at 5:00am and arrive in Mawlamyine at 11:00am
• Depart Yangon at 07:30am and arrive in Mawlamyine at 15:50am

Mawlamyine to Yangon (Approx: 8:30 hours & 6 hours) 

• Depart Mawlamyine at 07:30am and arrive in Yangon at 16:00
• Depart Mawlamyine at 12:00noon and arrive in Yangon at 18:00

The introduction of these new services is another welcome step in the revival of Myanmar’s railway network. Travellers can now enjoy a smoother journey while taking in beautiful countryside, rice paddies, villages and rivers along the way.

The new DEMU trains complement the existing services between Yangon and Mandalay, where three daily departures operate in each direction. 

Mandalay Schedule:

Yangon to Mandalay (Approx. 10 hours) 

• Depart Yangon at 6:00am; arrive in Mandalay at 16:00
• Depart Yangon at 7:00am; arrive in Mandalay at 17:00.
• Depart Yangon at 8:30am; arrive in Mandalay at 18:30.

Mandalay to Yangon (Approx. 10 hours)

• Depart Mandalay at 6:00am; arrive in Yangon at 16:00
• Depart Mandalay at 7:00am; arrive in Yangon at 17:00
• Depart Mandalay at 08:30am; arrive in Yangon at 18:30

Whether you’re planning a classic journey between Myanmar’s two largest cities or heading south to the colonial streets and vibrant markets of Mawlamyine, travelling by rail is once again becoming one of the country’s most enjoyable and authentic travel experiences.
