Mindanao Meets the Sea

Boasting a rich cultural heritage and awe-inspiring natural landscapes, the island region of Mindanao is a hidden gem unlike any other. It is here that the dream weavers of the T’boli indigenous tribe in Lake Sebu reside, creating the famed T’nalak and passing down their weaving traditions for centuries. Mindanao is also home to the unspoiled rolling hills of the La Palmera Mountain Ridge in Sultan Kudarat. Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines at 2,954 metres, rises majestically over the region and is one of the natural habitats of the Philippine Eagle.

This month, as you plan your summer adventures for next year, we turn the spotlight to some of Mindanao’s most celebrated beaches.

Today, we feature Samal Island in Davao del Norte. Officially known as the Island Garden City of Samal, it is renowned for its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters that invite scuba diving, island hopping and even hiking. Just a short 2-kilometre ferry ride from Davao City, Samal is one of the largest resort cities in the Philippines.

The months of December to May are generally the best time to visit, offering calm seas and dry weather. June to November marks the rainy season, which can also be enjoyable for those who prefer fewer crowds. Whatever season you choose, Samal Island is always ready to welcome you.
