Where Stories Brew: Sri Lanka’s First Coffee Heritage Trail
Before tea claimed the spotlight, it was coffee that once flourished in Sri Lanka’s hill country. Today, nestled just outside Kandy, the Coffee Trail at Hotel Tree of Life invites travelers to rediscover this forgotten chapter through a guided and hands-on journey into the island’s brewing heritage.
The experience begins with a warm welcome and a short introduction to the early days of coffee cultivation in Ceylon. Guests are then led through the estate’s coffee fields, where Arabica plants grow under the canopy of spice trees. Along the trail, there are opportunities to engage in trimming, plucking and understanding the challenges of sustainable farming in Sri Lanka’s changing climate.
The walk continues into the processing area, where the story deepens. Guests observe the full post-harvest cycle from pulping and fermenting to sun-drying and grading. A live roasting session using firewood and clay brings the process to life. Guests are invited to join in, roasting a small batch themselves.
The trail culminates at the elegant colonial-era Homes Bungalow. Here, an in-house barista leads a tasting session featuring light to dark roasts paired with traditional Sri Lankan sweetmeats. Every sip reveals something new, connecting flavour with history.
To leave a lasting impact, guests can plant their own seedling or adopt a coffee plant, with proceeds supporting local community initiatives. This immersive half-day experience is ideal for culture-seekers and slow travelers.
