Bangkok on Track

Want to skip the chaos of taxis and tuk-tuks? Getting around Bangkok is easier and more exciting thanks to its modern Skytrain (BTS) and Metro (MRT) systems. For travelers, these networks are not only a fast way to escape the city’s legendary traffic but also a fascinating glimpse into Bangkok’s vibrant urban life. Clean, efficient and safe, both systems connect you to major shopping malls, cultural attractions and lively neighborhoods – making them an essential part of the Bangkok experience.

An interesting quirk is that the BTS and MRT are operated by two separate companies. This means that while both systems are well integrated physically, they require different tickets or stored-value cards. Travelers often find this unusual compared to other cities, but it adds a touch of local character to navigating Bangkok’s public transport. Once you get the hang of it, transferring between the two is easy and well signposted.

The MRT also surprises visitors with some remarkably beautiful stations. Sanam Chai Station, near the Grand Palace, feels like stepping into a museum, with its elegant white columns and intricate décor inspired by Thai palatial design. Bang Sue Grand Station, the country’s largest rail hub, impresses with its vast modern architecture and role as a new transport gateway. Another favorite is Hua Lamphong Station, the historic terminus that blends classic charm with modern metro access.

Together, the BTS and MRT make exploring Bangkok not just convenient but memorable – whether you’re zipping above the skyline on the Skytrain or admiring artful design beneath the city streets.
