THAILAND
Khao Yai & Beyond!
Khao Yai National Park, Thailand’s third-largest park (2,168 km²), reaches a peak of 1,351 m at Khao Rom and is considered one of the best places in the country for wildlife viewing, trekking, and cycling. It forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage forest complex. Wildlife includes pig-tailed macaques, sambar deer, gibbons, bears, porcupines, otters, hornbills, cuckoos, pythons, lizards, and more. The park is home to 85 species of reptiles and 440 species of birds, including the largest population of hornbills in Thailand. Easy hikes lead to beautiful waterfalls, such as Haew Su Wat Waterfall, where the famous cliff-jumping scene from the film The Beach, starring Virginie Ledoyen, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Guillaume Canet, was filmed.
But that’s not all…
Khao Yai is also home to vineyards, mango farms, sunflower fields, excellent dining venues, art museums, and exhibitions—including the incredible Jim Thompson Farm event, held every two years (dates to be confirmed).
At sunset, we love taking our customers to a secret coffee shop where they can watch an impressive stream of bats emerging from the Tham Khao Luk Chang cave to hunt. This spectacular natural display, sometimes interrupted by swooping birds of prey feeding on the bats, can last for more than an hour!
Where to stay…
There are several outstanding properties in the region, such as Lala Mukha, perfect for guests who enjoy a glamping experience. The hotel features 31 fully equipped, contemporary-style safari tents and tree houses nestled in an enchanting tropical landscape overlooking a central lake.
The InterContinental Khao Yai is another excellent choice. Designed by award-winning American architect Bill Bensley—who drew inspiration from the region’s pivotal role in Thai railway history—the resort incorporates 23 original railcars collected from around the country and repurposed into buildings, including 19 transformed into suites and villas. Four additional railcars were redesigned into the Papillon Bar, the French-themed restaurant Poirot (recognised in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026), the Back on Track Spa, and the Planet Trekkers kids’ club. The resort proudly stands among the best train-themed destinations in the world. We are particularly fond of the beautiful Swan Lake, where guests can walk, cycle, and watch or listen for wildlife.
When to go…
The dry season (November to March) is the best time for wildlife viewing, while the rainy season (June to October) offers the most impressive waterfalls.
