UZBEKISTAN

Vibrant Valley Traditions

Summertime is a prime season to showcase the rich traditions of Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley – a fertile, multiethnic region where music, dance and crafts thrive. Visitors can engage with artisans, watch intimate live performances and feel the region’s pride and openness – creating authentic memories.

While exact dates vary yearly, summer in the Valley often features vibrant local festivals in cities like Margilan, Fergana, Rishtan and Kokand. You’ll witness dancers in colorful ikat robes performing Fergana’s signature lyrical choreography – marked by graceful wrist circles, flowing head moves and improvisation.

In nearby Khorezm, the energetic Lazgi dance – recognized by UNESCO – may also appear during special cultural showcases.

Look for summer craft fairs like the Atlas Bayrami in Margilan (celebrating its famed silk heritage) or folkarts events in Rishtan and Kokand. Summer often brings gatherings where local weavers, potters and craftsmen display traditional wares, enticing visitors with handson experiences.

Classical itineraries in Uzbekistan include well-known cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. But let’s deviate from the usual route and explore the small town of Chust in Namangan Province – one of the ancient settlements of the Fergana Valley; in 2005 Chust celebrated its 3.500th anniversary.

Chust is one of the oldest metal processing centers in Central Asia and is famous for its unique knives, as well as traditional headdresses – skullcaps. Therefore, the first thing you should definitely buy while staying in Chust is a knife (pichak) – best in Uzbekistan.

Local blacksmiths (suzangars) put their brand on the blade of the finished product. It usually looks like a simple drawing. Each knife is a piece of art, produced manually in small forges by artisans, who pass their skills from father to son. Chust knives are incredibly sharp and beautiful. Their blade will serve its owner for a long time and remain sharp. Pichaks differ in cost, purpose and even in the metal of manufacture. The best knives are made of dark gray steel with a blue tint.
